Meditation on the painting "Love in creation"

Meditation on the painting
"Love in creation"

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth and the Spirit of God moved over the face of the deep.
Behold! the heavens in their mystery, expanding and bursting into the dark places.
See! The spheres and lights in their right places, swinging through the universal clouds, playing their ancient themes to God’s glory.
Lo! Here is the earth, its four corners, basking in the light and warmth of God’s infinite blessing, giving her strength, variety, fruitfulness.

Imposed upon the deep, intended, pattern of all that is:
chaos
harsh pain
scars
darkness
brokenness
futility
anger
and an end of harmony.

Light shone in the darkness and the darkness did not overpower it.

And even in the jagged pain and brokenness
See! Here comes the eternal, ascended Christ, crowned in glory, light of the world, reflecting the Father for us.
Here He is! at the centre of all creation.
Here too is all human life, the intricate web, the pattern of our interdependent relationship with the heavens and the earth
and, grace upon grace, within the fabric of our lives we find the inner life of our Trinitarian God, whose love is not sealed off from us, but spills out over and around us.

If I read from right to left, I see, with earthly eyes, God’s glorious creation descending into darkness and chaos.
If I read from left to right, I see, with the eyes of hope, the work of God’s continuing creative act which brings order out of chaos.

He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
